Summer learning journey week 1 activity 2 day 5

kiora bloggers,

For today's activity we had to retell the story of an amazing woman from Syria. This woman's name is Yousra Marindi. She was a very talented swimmer. When the day came, The day of her home to be destroyed her and her big sister Sarah had to leave. They left the rest of their family behind. The sisters went by boat, but since they were refugees there was a guard who wouldn't let them out of the country they hid in the bushes for many hours waiting for the right moment to get out.

When they all boarded the little boat that was meant to be holding 6 or 7 people, but instead there 20 all together. After about 20 minutes of sailing the engine stopped. Water started flowing into the boat people tried taking out the water with buckets. Yousra Marindi thought that It would be such a shame for them to drown here in the middle of the ocean when she could swim. Her, her sister and 2 other people jumped over board to help. Yousra Marindi tied a rope to the boat she swam in the freezing cold salty water.

Her eyes were burning form the salty water. Dragging 16 people with only three people helping her. She swam for about 3 hours and a half. They all reached their destination in Lebanon but the sisters were then headed to Germany, Berlin. After a few years there family came to Germany & they lived happily.

  1. Good Morning Fatima,

Kueni here from the Summer Learning Journey. I hope you are enjoying your school holidays, what have you been doing? Besides being awesome and doing the Summer Learning Journey :)

I really enjoyed reading your blog post this morning about your retold story about Yusra Madrini. I like that you were able to read/watch her story and retell the story in your words, making sure all the important parts of the story were still included.

I think her story is truly amazing, and a very inspirational one too! I see that you have used a similar structure to the one on Yusra’s personal profile, as it helped you when you were trying to write you retold story of what happened.

I think it is cool that she is now training for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, will you be tuning in to watch the olympics? If so, what are your favourite events/sports to watch?

    Ka kite ano,
    Kueni
